Nike is bringing its Web3 to the masses through the Fortnite game's Web2

Nike is bringing its Swoosh NFTs platform, its star Web3 project, to the masses through the Fortnite game's Web2. A few days ago, Nike tweeted a teaser of the "Ultimate Sneaker Quest" in Fortnite, an expected new season of this well-known game.

In the teaser we could see the logo of Nike Air Max and that of Nike's NFT platform, Swoosh, next to the logo of Unreal Engine, a well-known video game engine, as well as that of Fortnite, from the Epic Games studio. Airphoria is the name by which this Nike release is identified.

All of this suggested that Nike was planning to integrate its NFT Swoosh platform within Fortnite. A big bet by Nike and Epic Games on NFTs would certainly mean a big step for the video game industry, as it would be the first time a major video game company would adopt NFTs. It would also be a huge coup for Nike, as it would give the company a platform to reach millions of Fortnite players around the world.

A digital collection in two worlds
However, Nike made it clear days later that we are dealing with digital collectibles that live in two different worlds. First of all, Epic Games has not included NFTs as skins in their platform, so what we see in the Nike Swoosh are not really NFTs, but simple digital collectibles. The clarification came directly from an Epic Games spokesperson, who said that the connection between Fortnite and Nike does not integrate any NFT or digital object exchange market into the world of Fortnite or its economy. Items recognized through these two ecosystems are purely for the enjoyment of the buyer and are not tradeable, transferable, or sellable, as has always been the case in Fortnite's economy.
However, the collection will be tied to Nike's Swoosh platform. In this way, each user receives an ANEU Swoosh upon registration and is represented by an NFT minted in Polygon. So, to encourage the adoption of the collection, Swoosh has found an interesting vehicle. All those Fortnite users and players who purchase the Airphoria collection (knowing that these items are not NFTs), will be able to unlock achievements within the Swoosh, which will be represented as NFTs on the platform. In this way, Nike fulfills its commitment Web3 in Swoosh and Epic Games encourages players to buy their new collection created hand in hand with Nike.
Fornite users
An important point in all this is that Fortnite users will have to connect both accounts: Swoosh and BitGo to get the achievement. BitGo is Nike's crypto wallet provider for the Swoosh, meaning it provides the technology that can hold the Swoosh NFT ANEU along with any digital apparel and accessories purchased through the Swoosh.
Thus, it is clear that the collaboration between Nike and Epic Games has created a digital collection that lives in two worlds: in Web2 with Epic Games and in Web3 with Swoosh. Each with its particularities, but completing both.
Swoosh, the entrance to Web3
Nike's adoption of Web3 is a sign of its commitment to the future. As the gaming industry continues to grow, Nike is positioning itself to be a leader in the space. By partnering with Epic Games, Nike is looking to reach millions of new customers and help shape the future of gaming.
Swoosh is essential in Nike's strategy. The Web3 platform launched by Nike in March 2023 has allowed Nike to position itself in the sector. It allows users to buy, trade and collect digital versions of Nike shoes and apparel. The platform is built on the Polygon blockchain, a layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum.
The platform has been met with mixed reactions from the sneaker community. Some fans are excited about the opportunity to own digital versions of their favorite sneakers, while others are skeptical about the value of NFTs. Only time will tell if the Swoosh will be successful. What is clear is that Nike relies on Web3 to expand its business model. The Swoosh is just the beginning of the company's journey into this new frontier.
